Kishwar Naheed

Kishwar Naheed (1940– , Pakistan) is an Urdu poet from Pakistan known for her pioneering feminist poetry. Under the dictator Zia-ul-Haq (1978-88) a movement toward greater Islamization increased restrictions on women and made the prosecution of rape cases far more difficult. Naheed and other women writers responded with poems such as “We Sinful Women.” At key moments in Pakistani history, these women fired back against repression with outspoken poems about self, emotion, and sexuality.
